GEORGE R. RICHMOND
CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER
JIM WALTER RESOURCES, INC.

George R. Richmond, born in Doncaster, England on July 15, 1950, began his coal mining career at age 15 as an apprentice mechanic at the Markham Main Colliery. He went on to earn a national diploma in mining engineering, a mechanical engineering degree and a government certificate in safety and law. Prior to joining Jim Walter Resources, Inc. (JWR), Mr. Richmond served in various apprentice and engineering capacities for Great Britain’s National Coal Board (now British Coal) for some 13 years.

Mr. Richmond joined JWR as a longwall mechanical engineer at the company’s Blue Creek No. 3 Mine in 1978 and rose through the ranks - serving as master mechanic, longwall manager, deputy mine manager and No. 3 Mine manager - before being promoted to vice president of operations in 1992. One year later he was promoted again to senior vice president of operations. Mr. Richmond became president and chief operating officer of Jim Walter Resources, Inc. on June 1, 1997.  In March 2006 Mr. Richmond was named Chief Executive Officer of Jim Walter Resources, Inc. and on December 20, 2006 he was appointed to the Board of Directors of Walter Industries, Inc.

Throughout his career with JWR, George has been instrumental in refining innovative longwall mining technologies, offering JWR a competitive advantage while assuring peak output from the Blue Creek seam reserves. The enhanced throughput and efficiency associated with longwall mining systems is only recently attracting attention outside of the industry, but George has been among those pioneering high-tech extraction and engineering methods for over three decades.
