| Located in West Central Alabama, the Town of Brookwood (population 658) is 55 miles southwest of Birmingham and 18 miles northeast of Tuscaloosa. Brookwood has a long history of coal mining, beginning in 1890. Several coal mines operated here supplying local coke ovens (some are still standing) and the steel industry in Birmingham. Jim Walter Resources moved its headquarters from Birmingham to Brookwood in 1977, the same year the Town of Brookwood was incorporated. | Brookwood is the home of the

High School "Panthers" and has 775
students in grades 9 -12. The first high school in Brookwood was built in 1898. Jim Walter Resources became partners with Brookwood High School in 1986 through the Adopt-A-School program. Black Warrior Methane, Corp., a subsidiary of Jim Walter Resources and El Paso Energy, adopted Brookwood Elementary School in 1989. Brookwood Elementary School has approximately 980 students in grades K - 6. |
